What happens to my family photos if I lose my phone?

Updated 5 November 2026

In short

With Famileze, a lost, broken or replaced iPhone doesn't mean lost memories. Every capture is encrypted on the phone and backed up to your family's private cloud. A new iPhone signed into the same Apple Account, with iCloud Keychain on, finds your family again. Another of your family devices can also connect it. Keep iCloud Keychain switched on.

What is safe, and what might not be

Your archive lives in two places: on your phone, and encrypted in your family's private cloud. Each new photo, video or note is backed up as soon as the phone is online. So when a phone goes missing, the archive itself is not on that phone alone.

Two things can be caught out:

The one thing to do now: keep iCloud Keychain on

Because your archive is end-to-end encrypted, Famileze holds no key to it. There is no Famileze password. The iPhone app quietly saves your family's details, including its key, to iCloud Keychain on your Apple Account, and that saved copy is your way back in. The app also offers you 12 words to write on paper — a spare copy of the key that works with no phone and no Apple Account at all.

It only works if iCloud Keychain is on. It is on for most iPhones already, but check today, while nothing is wrong. It takes a minute.

Turning iCloud Keychain on

  1. Open the iPhone's Settings app and tap your name at the top.
  2. Tap iCloud.
  3. Under Saved to iCloud, tap Passwords. On older iPhones (iOS 17 and before) the row is called Passwords & Keychain. If you don't see it, tap See All first.
  4. Turn on Sync this iPhone. Apple may ask for your iPhone passcode or your Apple Account password, and if two-factor authentication isn't on for your Apple Account yet, it will ask you to turn that on first. That is Apple's own lock on the Keychain, so say yes.
  5. Open Famileze once, online. The app writes your family's key to the Keychain again every time it opens, so a copy made while the switch was off goes up now.

Back in Famileze, Settings → 🔑 Security shows a row for the iCloud copy. The app can't see Apple's switch from the inside, so tapping ☁️ I keep it in iCloud Keychain and then ✓ I've checked — it's on is you telling it; the row then reads on, as you told us with the date. Your 12 words are the other half: they are the way back if you ever leave Apple, turn iCloud off, or find the switch had been off all along.

What the switch does: iCloud Keychain is the same place your iPhone keeps saved passwords and Wi-Fi networks. Apple encrypts it end to end, so Apple can't read what's in it either, and it follows your Apple Account to every iPhone, iPad and Mac you sign in. Famileze puts your family's key there, and nowhere else at Apple.

A second safety net is another device of your own in the family, such as an iPad. It can connect a new phone directly.

Getting your family back on a new iPhone

  1. Sign the new iPhone into the same Apple Account, with iCloud Keychain on.
  2. Install Famileze from the App Store and open it. Stay online: the archive downloads from the cloud.
  3. Famileze shows "Your family is saved to this Apple Account".
  4. Tap 🔁 A replacement for one of my devices. (If you still have the old phone and want to keep it, tap + Another device in the family instead.)
  5. Under "Which device is this replacing?", choose the lost phone.
  6. Let your timeline, calendar and folders fill in.
  7. Open Settings → 🔗 This phone, find 📱 Devices, and finish the replacement. If the old phone is gone, tap The old device is lost or broken — finish anyway. If you still have it, open it once so anything left on it reaches the family, then tap ✓ Finish.

Finishing removes the old phone from your family, so it stops syncing. Aim to finish within 14 days: after that, no other device can be added until you do.

If you moved to the new iPhone using Apple's own phone-to-phone transfer, Famileze may already open as your family, as the same device. In that case there's nothing to replace.

If the new phone comes up empty: your 12 words

If iCloud backup was off or full, you've lost the Apple Account, or the new phone is an Android, your 12 words bring the archive back with no old phone at all. On the first screen tap 🔑 I have my 12 words, enter the email address your family is registered to, type the six-digit code we send there, then type the words in order. The family opens straight away, and takes over from the lost phone once a device you still have approves it, or after the old phone has been quiet for a week. The full walk-through, and how the words keep your archive safe, is in Lost your phone? Every way to get your family archive back.

Connecting the new phone from another family device

If iCloud Keychain wasn't on, or the new phone uses a different Apple Account, use another of your own devices that's already in the family.

  1. On that device, open Settings → 🔗 This phone and tap + Connect an iPad or a new phone.
  2. Choose 🔁 Replace next to the lost phone. (Use + Add an iPad or another phone if you're keeping the old one.)
  3. On the new phone, install Famileze, open it and tap 📱 Connect this device.
  4. Scan the QR code, or type the two codes. They work once and expire in 24 hours.
  5. Finish the replacement under 📱 Devices, as in step 7 above.

A family can have up to 6 devices. Replacing a phone swaps one for another, so it doesn't use up an extra place.

If it's the other parent's phone

A co-parent has their own place in the family, so the same steps work for them on their own phone and Apple Account. Meanwhile, nothing changes for you: your access carries on as normal.

Using Famileze without a connection

Your phone keeps its own copy of the archive. Photos, calendar and records stay browsable offline, and new captures send as soon as you're back online. Getting the archive onto a new phone does need a connection.

A copy in your own hands

If you'd like a copy that doesn't depend on any phone, the free Famileze desktop app for Mac keeps the whole archive on your computer as ordinary photo and text files. Back up everything copies it to an external drive. It's an extra, never a requirement.

What it doesn't do

Questions parents ask

Will I lose my family photos if my phone is stolen?

No. Your archive is backed up, encrypted, to your family's private cloud. Set up a new iPhone on the same Apple Account with iCloud Keychain on, and Famileze finds your family again.

Do I need a Famileze password to restore my archive?

No. There is no Famileze password. Your way back in is your family's key, saved to your iCloud Keychain, or another device of yours that's already in the family.

Can Famileze restore my account for me?

No. Your archive is end-to-end encrypted and we hold no key, so we can't unlock it or reset it. That's why keeping iCloud Keychain on matters.

Can someone who finds my phone see my family archive?

Only if they can unlock the phone. Finish the replacement under 📱 Devices and the old phone is removed from your family, so it stops syncing.

Can I use Famileze with no internet?

Yes, for browsing and capturing. Your phone keeps its own copy, and new captures send once you're back online.
